Hi Erwin, with a Document CAL you assign these to a particular QlikView app, and they will only be consumed by users of that app. With a Session CAL it will always give access to any app. If you have one application that you don't care whether users get locked out of it and another you always want to use your Session CAL on then you are a little stuck. Probably the most important thing is to limit access to applications by Active Directory (or other security) so that users can not get into the apps that you are not intending them to use - and will therefore not consume licences.

Hi All,
Had a quick question regarding Session CAL's. Can access be restricted to only a particular dashboard on using Session CAL's? I have heard frequently that Session CAL's cannot be ring fenced to a single project/dashboard. What does that mean exactly?

Hi Daniele,

I have a QlikView app that parses the Events log table. When any CAL is used the type of CAL is written to the event log. When it is a Session CAL the number of CALs in use is written also. The total number of Session CALs is in a config file, and when one value matches the other then there are no Session CALs left. I use a simple QlikView Alert to then send an email notifying people of this.

Hope that helps.

Hi Siddarth,

The extranet server will not in itself improve the situation. The tech behind each of the different server types is exactly the same, similarly with the licencing nothing will change by changing licence type. Your best bet will be to place a Small Business Server in both the UK and US locations you can then copy QVW files to each of those locations to be run locally. If you have QlikView Publisher you can configure this to push apps to different servers. If you do not you can use a separate scheduler to do the copy - but you will need to be careful of conflicts (i.e. copying before a file is fully updated).

If you want the UK arm to purchase their licences independently then please put them in touch with us, as we will be happy to supply. We can also recommend a partner in the US to assist there. This will in both cases also mean that they will have local support.

Hope that helps. Steve.

Hi Steve,

We have a situation where we are having users in US,UK locations not able to properly load the dashboard whose server is placed in India.
We are thinking of setting up an extra-net server in US and then assigning session cal for users. Is that the correct approach or should we upgrade to EE server from SBE and use clustering servers in US and UK.

Our India user population is around 15 , UK 15 and US 20. Kindly advise if session cal with QES will work

Hi Debbie, I would say that a number of Session CALs would definitely be the way ahead here. The question is all about concurrency, and whether usage is spread out or if it comes in clumps - which could cause a problem for Session CALs. The good thing with Session CALs is that they only get used when other CALs are not available - so if you get your top n% of users Named CALs and converted most of the rest to Session CALs then the Session CALs would only get used for occasional users - so would stretch a long way. A good smattering of Usage CALs as well would provide a bit of a buffer, if the number of Session CALs you go for it not quite right.

I have a client with almost 5000 named cals and no other license types. I am thinking this is cost prohibitive and they should convert some to Session Cals as there appears to be many users who are on for short bursts. They have the governance dashboard to analyze the usage. Would be nice if there was a "calculator" of sorts to determine the best combination of licenses. Hmm... maybe that would be a great addition to the governance dashboard. Who has the algorithm for this? :-)

Boris / Stephen,

Thanks for all your comments. I know where I have sites with a mix of Full and Document or Session CALs the Full CALs are not set to auto allocate and are managed manually. Generally those that need to lease a licence or consume many apps do not change that often. This way you can ensure that the most expensive licences are reserved for those that really need them. I've added some tables to Ops Monitor (based on an extract using QV Server CAL Manager) to show which Full CAL users are using them least and should have them manually revoked and which Document/Session CAL users consume most and should be given Full CALs.

This tends to work, with the usage patterns I've come across, but appreciate that your experience may be different Boris.

Personally I agree that the way that licences are allocated with the most costly available being given out first (i.e. Full CAL before Session or Document) serves Qlik better than their customers. I would have thought that in most cases users would want Document CALs consumed first, with full CALs reserved for manual assignment for Developers and high volume users - unless all Document CALs are already taken.

Hi Stephen - thanks for your comments. That is a new one on me about mixing Document and Session CALs - one of my clients was advised they would need to swap all of their Document CALs for Session ones. I can see that a mix of these would be very useful. This way the apps that need to be ring fenced and be always available could have document CALs assigned to them.

I've never really considered Usage CALs, as you have the risk of a user not being aware of the hour long slots consuming all of the usage CALs before the month is up and they can be reset. I should probably go back and add a note about these to the above...
